10 November 2011 The Isle of Wight was formed at the end of the last Ice Age and its history can be traced back as early as 1bc when it was thought to have been mentioned by historians during this time. The Isle was also mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1086 and was the location of many Anglo-Saxon battles. Some of the castles and stately homes which have added to the rich history of the Isle continue to be major visitor attractions and can be seen to this day. The Isle of Wight has been the source and location of many areas of archaeological significance with the discovery of dinosaur fossil beds and relics and artefacts from the Bronze, Iron and Roman Ages all discovered in the past. Whilst the archaeological and historical areas of interest appeal to many of the Isle’s visitors there are just as many who are attracted to the simple and natural beauty of the area. The acres of unspoiled coastline and beached areas, country parks, wildlife sanctuaries as well as the geological significance of the local area and natural formations are just some of the reasons why the area continues to be popular with both studiers and merely interested parties. As the demand for the historical and heritage sites grows as does the need for Isle of Wight accommodation and other visitor amenities.
