Though many British tourists are looking abroad for their holiday, the domestic tourism market also enjoys a significant number of travellers. Amazing Isle of Wight holidays remain one of the most popular options throughout the year. The island situated in the English Channel in just a few kilometres from the British coast is worth visiting in any season.
The Island in Summer
While some travellers fly to the sun to distant exotic places, there are those who prefer to spend summer within the country. For many people the Isle of Wight is the first choice for summer breaks. What makes it so special that travellers switch from holidays abroad to holidays at home? It’s the clean air, beautiful beaches and green parks that invite people to spend Isle of Wight holidays. At the moment there are eleven beaches and three of them have won the Blue Flag award. It is given to beaches, which correspond to the highest environmental management standards and can boast of high bathing water quality and clean coastal areas. The island beaches are thoroughly inspected on a daily basis and holiday makers are invited to follow certain guidelines during the breaks.
A great number of parks make the island look very green from above. One of the breathtaking natural sights is situated in Shanklin. The natural gorge called Shanklin Chine was opened in 1817; now it’s on the must-see list of many visitors who opt for Isle of Wight holidays. People tried to explore it since the 18th century being attracted by its impressive nature and waterfalls but the Chine was always too rough for explorers. Eventually, in 1817 William Colenutt managed to make a path through the valley and Shanklin Chine welcomed its first visitors. The gorge has rich flora and fauna: gunnera manicata, liverworts, mosses and ferns have become the habitat for birds, butterflies, chipmunks and squirrels. Those who are interested in plants can also visit the Ventnor Botanic Gardens, which occupy 22 acres and boast around 10,000 plants, trees, shrubs and rare species.
The Island in Winter
The Island is a good option for the Isle of Wight holidays in cooler months too. Though the weather is no longer comfortable for bathing, visitors can explore numerous historic sights, museums and themed attractions. The Roman villas, Carisbrooke Castle, Yarmouth Castle and Bembridge Windmill can be a good start for a short trip. A wide selection of museums may impress even the most experienced travellers: the boat museum, the postcard museum, Dinosaur Isle, the bus museum, the maritime museum and many others are open to visitors.
Those who look for themed attractions can discover one of the most advanced model railways in the country, take a ride on a steam train, explore the shipwrecks at the Underwater Archaeology Centre, experience the amazing Waltzing Waters or go for a chairlift ride at the Needles Park. There is one thing travellers can enjoy during the Isle of Wight holidays regardless of the season – delicious seafood dishes and good ale served in cosy pubs and restaurants.
