Winter breaks on the Isle of Wight

The Isle of Wight is one of the most popular holiday destinations for many British travellers. In warmer months people book a room at a cosy Isle of Wight hotel to enjoy the stunning scenery and beaches. In winter people don’t go there for the weather. The Isle of Wight has many things to offer tourists during cool months too: natural sights, historic places and festivals.

The Isle of Wight is situated in the English Channel, off the south coast of Southern England. There is a regular car and passenger ferry service from the ports of Lymington, Portsmouth and Southampton. Tourists coming from more distant places can travel by plane to Heathrow and Gatwick airports, which are within an hour and a half driving distance from ferry terminals. European tourists can arrive at Southampton airport; it takes approximately 20 minutes to reach the nearest ferry terminal by car. Alternatively, there are long-haul taxi operators to make the trip to one’s Isle of Wight hotel shorter and more comfortable. Besides, the ferry terminals of Portsmouth and Southampton are connected with London by the railway line. There is the electric train line on the island covering routes between the towns of Ryde, Shanklin, Sandown, Lake and Brading and connecting them with a direct interchange station of the mainland railway.

One of the oldest natural island attractions is Shanklin Chine. This place provides tourists a unique opportunity to enjoy the ultimate natural beauty of waterfalls and unique plants. The valley has been open to visitors since 1817 and now one can explore the gorge following the trail with several stopping stations. No matter how cosy and comfortable their Isle of Wight hotel is, travellers shouldn’t miss out on visiting one of the most famous pubs on the island. The Fisherman’s Cottage opened its doors to visitors at the same time as the valley; it’s situated on the beach and serves a wide range of ale with delicious seafood dishes.

Travellers with a keen interest in architecture can also be satisfied with their winter breaks on the Isle of Wight. The island has all kinds of historic buildings from Yarmouth Castle to Roman villas. Yarmouth Castle was built in the middle of the 16th century as a harbour defence building of Henry VII. Near the castle there is Osborne House famous for its gardens, which are so nice to have a walk around before going back to a comfortable Isle of Wight hotel. Once the house was the island residence of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and now it has royal rooms with original furniture and artwork on display. The windmill, which dates back to the beginning of the 18th century, is also worth seeing. It is the oldest windmill on the island with all the wooden mechanisms remaining intact. Two Roman villas invite visitors to discover the history of the Roman presence on the island.

Besides typical tourist attractions, there are many events taking place on the island. It’s best to check the calendar of events prior to departure to book a comfortable Isle of Wight hotel near the most interesting venue.
