Bubblegum & Cheese is a musical adventure, it's a mindset, an attitude - it's all about having a great time based around the kind of records that you simply do not hear on the radio anymore. Friday
Have you ever been to see a band from the 70's and turned up to find out the only remaining original member was the drummer, singer or bass player? Well, try going along to see Matchbox.... not only will you hear their string of hits from the era, including top tens such as When You Ask About Love, Midnight Dynamos and not forgetting their million seller classic Rockabilly Rebel, but you will also be amazed to find the exact line up that made all those records. If this is not unique, it is very rare indeed.
Graham was lead singer of Matchbox who had hit’s all over the world in the late 70’s, with songs like When You Ask About Love, Rockabilly Rebels and Midnight Dynamos. He brings a great 70s rockabilly sound, rocking the Shanklin Hotel tonight as a duo. Saturday
Bob then formed a new band with new members Jeff Allen and Keith Marshall called The Age. Vic Faulkner joined the band a few months later.
For about a year they had a Female singer, Caroline Hall and gigged under the name of Caroline Hall and The Age.
In 1971 when Bob, Keith, Vic and Jeff (all from North London) met their manager David Blaylock and the band was renamed Hello. It was while gigging at the Rolling Mills Club in Edmonton, London that Songwriter/Musician Russ Ballad (Argent) was first introduced to the band. After this meeting David came with Russ to see them again at Jeff's Mums house, where they rehearsed, and began writing songs for the band.
Their Top 10 hits in the UK Singles Chart were "Tell Him" (a cover of The Exciters 1963 hit) and "New York Groove", the latter of which was written by Argent band member Russ Ballard. "New York Groove" was later covered to provide a solo Billboard Hot 100 chart hit in the U.S., for the rock guitarist Ace Frehley of the band Kiss. Sunday
Bubblegum & Cheese is a musical adventure, it's a mindset, an attitude - it's all about having a great time based around the kind of records that you simply do not hear on the radio anymore.
We're talking about world superstars & one hit wonders: the Beatles, Elvis, Sinatra, the Who, the Monkees & the Stones. Then there's Lulu, KC & the Sunshine Band, Modern Romance & the Rah Band along with the Archies, The Jags & Bill Lovelady.
These are the kind of songs that in some cases are so square they are cool like Roger Whittaker's New World in the Morning, Vanity Fair's Early in the Morning or the 1975 Dutch Eurovision winner Ding a Dong.
Alex Dyke, creator and presenter of Bubblegum & Cheese, says: "It's a fact when these hits are put together with the theme from the Banana Splits or Return of the Saint. It's a 100% infectious. It is handclapping, foot-stomping, goodtime feel good music.
BBC Radio DJ Alex Dyke started playing Bubblegum and Cheese on the radio about five years ago, Bubblegum and Cheese is up happy hand clapping music. Songs like “Sugar Sugar” “Yummy Yummy Yummy” and artists like the Bay City Rollers, Slade, The Monkees and Sweet are all played on the radio show and at these great disco party nights. So come and do the Bump with us.
So come, dress to impress, boogie on down and do the Bump with us!
