Monday 20th February

THE DENISE LAWRENCE BAND with RON DRAKE

Denise has been bringing her wonderful singing, her dry humour and her talented band to us at The Shanklin for over ten years. Their constantly high musical standards and the wide variation of their repertoire always provides us with dazzling jazz concerts with selections taken from many genres of the ‘Jazz Age’. On this occasion, the band will also feature the incredibly gifted international clarinet and sax star, RON DRAKE. From his early days as a member of the Alan Elsdon Band, though his time in the Rod Mason and Alex Welsh Reunion Bands, Ron Drake has remained in his current position as one of Europe’s most distinguished clarinet players. As well as an outstanding soloist, Ron is also one of the very finest backers of a vocalist - hence his frequent appearances in recent years with Denise.

Tuesday 21st February

THE UNITY STOMPERS

Always a joy to hear, this band have an almost ‘cult’ following as a result of their frequent appearances at our jazz weekends. They have provided great jazz entertainment to visitors to the island since the late 50s, when the band was first formed. You will hear some fine traditional jazz, sprinkled with a few spirituals - and always one or two ‘surprises’. Led by the masterly trumpet playing of their leader, Andy Norman, this band never fail to leave both dancers and listeners wanting more.

Wednesday 22nd February

THE DAVE SHEPHERD SWINGTET with ROGER NOBES

Clarinettist, Dave Shepherd, is a true legend of the British jazz scene. Voted ‘best UK clarinet player’ for more years then he can remember, he has been correctly dubbed the British Benny Goodman. Dave was an original member of the Pizza Express All-Stars and has played alongside all the American ‘greats’ like Billie Holiday, Teddy Wilson etc. An added bonus for us is the inclusion in his band of the international vibraphone star, ROGER NOBES.

Thursday 23rd February

DAVE STRADWICK’S SUSSEX JAZZ KINGS

A night in New Orleans is promised by the splendid Sussex Jazz Kings who are led by trumpeter Dave Stradwick. Their infectious and lilting New Orleans style is a joy to hear and the dance floor is sure to be in great demand. Expect a splendid selection of stomps, rags, marches, blues with everything that is best from this era of jazz. These are six truly dedicated musicians who will produce a wonderful finale to our mid-week festival of jazz.
The entire week is organised and compered by Denise and Tony Lawrence.

Jazz from 8.15pm every evening in the fabulous Starlite Room.
Reminiscent of a ballroom found in some of the world's best cruise ships, the Starlite Room has panoramic views over the picturesque Sandown Bay. It has a beautiful stage with dance floor and comfortable seating.
